Terms
Commonly confusing terms
Official domain
A domain controlled by the software vendor, developer, foundation, or open-source project. It is the safest starting point before downloading.
TermChecksum / SHA256
A checksum is a file fingerprint. It is most useful when the vendor or project publishes the expected value.
TermCode signing
Code signing helps identify the publisher of an installer or executable and can show whether the file has been altered after signing.
TermFreemium
A freemium product has a free tier but charges for higher limits, team features, admin controls, storage, automation, or security capabilities.
TermCommercial use
Free download and business-use permission are different questions. Personal-free, trial, open-source, and paid licenses should be separated.
TermPortable app
A portable app can run from a folder without a traditional system-wide installer, but source and update checks still matter.
TermBundled installer
Some installers offer browser extensions, extra apps, or setting changes. Official source checks do not replace reading setup screens.
TermWeb service vs installable app
Installable apps require source and update checks; web services require account, data, plan, and sharing checks.
TermCloud sharing
Cloud sharing can expose files when links, guests, workspace ownership, or sync folders are not reviewed.
TermRemote access
Remote access tools can control screens, transfer files, or expose private networks, so official download checks must be paired with access controls.
TermLTS and release notes
Release notes, stable channels, and long-term-support versions help you avoid beta builds or outdated installers.
TermTerms and privacy policy
Terms and privacy policies explain allowed use, data handling, retention, account ownership, and plan restrictions.
